LA02 – sketching techniques

Posted on November 15, 2016November 15, 2016 Posted in Learning Activities, UncategorizedTagged fruitjuice, la02, logo, loosejuice, sketching, techniquesLeave a comment

Assignment:

You are briefed to do an illustration for fruit juice packaging (orange and banana flavour). The name of the product is: Loose Juice.

  • Draw at least 15 scamps (they can be A6 size each) of what the label will look like. Remember to include the fruit, the name of the flavour and the name of the product.
  • Choose one of your sketches and draw the label, using Adobe Illustrator. The artwork can be A6 (landscape or portrait).

.

Creating this many different sketches was a challenge, I ran out of ideas more times than I had expected. But at the same time I also came up with more ideas than I thought was possible, all thanks to the miracle of sketching.

Because I had to create 15 scamps, I couldn’t give up just because my inspiration ran out. I stared at the paper and I kept using my pencil and eraser until I had them all down. I outlined them all with a 0.3 pen, and erased pencilmarks in the end to make it clearer.

During this assignment I’ve learned a lot about idea development, and I really enjoyed the challenge of sketching. For the first time I didn’t go for my first good idea, but waited for the better idea which came on (probably) my third attempt at creating something worth drawing. The sketches are 6×6 cm.

result

The design I ended up with reminds me of basketball and sport in general. The colors I chose are fresh and interesting, suits the fruits of the juice and they work really well together. At first the background was white, but when I exported the file, something wrong happened – resulting in the background being black. This was a lucky accident, as it works really well and ended up making the final result.

I hope you like it.
